Global Bond Risk Premiums Soar as Investors Seek Safest Assets

July 27 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese corporate bond risk rose to the highest in more than two years and debt sales faltered globally as investors shunned all but the safest of debt.

Tyco Electronics Ltd. canceled a bond offering. DAE Aviation Holdings Inc. scrapped plans for a loan. Credit-default swaps on Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Bear Stearns Cos. rose to records on concerns investment banks will be stuck with high- yield, high-risk debt that they are unable to sell. The rout spread to indexes gauging the risk of owning everything from bank loans to emerging market debt.

``The fear has set in,'' said Gregory Habeeb, who manages $7.75 billion of bonds at Calvert Asset Management Co. in Bethesda, Maryland. ``No one wants to hold bonds and everyone wants to sell.''

Risk premiums surged after Absolute Capital Group Ltd., an Australian hedge fund, suspended withdrawals from two funds after forecasting losses on U.S.

State's low-scoring schools improving 3 years after settlement

Three years after a legal settlement showered new money and attention on low-scoring schools across the state, the lawyers who sued California on behalf of thousands of needy students say their efforts are largely paying off.

"Students are receiving new textbooks. Building repairs are happening that didn't before, and they're happening faster. And the percentage of fully credentialed teachers - and teachers trained to teach English learners - is on the rise," said attorney John Affeldt of Public Advocates in San Francisco, a public interest law firm that joined the American Civil Liberties Union and Morrison & Foerster LLP in 2000 to sue the state for better schools.

But in the Bay Area, a progress report to be released today shows the number of schools with severe health and safety problems has increased to 105 in 2006 from 90 in 2005.

Ford posts profit, warns about future

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Ford surprised Wall Street Thursday by posting its first quarterly profit in two years. Then it spoiled the party by warning investors that it still expects big losses in the next two quarters and no return to full-year profitability until 2009.

Ford squeezed most of the gains out through cost cutting, mainly with a roughly 30 percent decline in jobs, and good sales overseas.

Now Ford needs its North American division to start turning a profit. That could be difficult with the company's U.S. rivals and Japanese automakers breathing down its neck.

Still, investors applauded Ford's $750 million second-quarter profit -- also helped by higher net pricing on its vehicles. Ford shares rose on a day when many other companies' shares tumbled.

UPDATE: Realty Q&A: A 6-step Plan For Boosting Credit Score To Buy Home

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) -- Question: I need some assistance in cleaning up my very poor credit score of 638 from Trans Union and 559 from Equifax. It's not the result of any credit cards but poor choices (which I admit) and a divorce with little to no child support of three girls. I'm in my mid-forties and all three girls are over the age of 18.

My question is how do I increase my FICO score within the next 6-10 months and is there a reputable agency that can work on my behalf? I would like to purchase a home early next year. I know there's a lot of work that needs to be done and would greatly appreciate any assistance you or an agency can provide.

Answer: I turned to attorney Edward Jamison, who operates a credit-repair law firm in Los Angeles, for help with this one because you did not mention any specific problems.
